Un brin d’histoire…

En 1133, Pierre de Laubaner, Vicomte de Marsan crée une des premières villes neuves du Sud-Ouest au confluent de la Douze et du Midou qui se rejoignent pour former la Midouze.
Place forte aux solides remparts, Mont de Marsan, «la ville aux trois rivières» devient un centre important pour le commerce du grain et des vins de l’Armagnac.
Au XVIIe siècle, elle s’embellit d’élégants hôtels particuliers aux façades décorées de ferronneries.

Devenue préfecture du département des Landes,
Mont de Marsan sera dotée au XIXe siècle, d’un ensemble de bâtiments administratifs de style Premier Empire, dont les plans sont dressés par un architecte et urbaniste remarquable, David-François Panay.

En 1946, l’installation de la base aérienne apporte un regain d’activités.
Mont de Marsan poursuit cet embellissement, accompagné d’une politique d’urbanisme privilégiant la maison avec jardin et intégrant l’architecture contemporaine (Hôtel du Département, ensemble du Midou, nouveau marché Saint Roch…). En savoir plus...

A little bit of history
In 1133, Pierre de Laubaner, the viscount of Marsan founded one of the first new towns in the south west at the confluence of two rivers, the Douze and the Midou which thereafter form a third : the Midouze. A stronghold with thick ramparts, Mont de Marsan, «the city of three rivers» became an important trading center for grain and the wines of Armagnac.
In the XVIIth century elegant mansions with wrought-iron were built, embellishing the town.

In the XIXth century Mont de Marsan became the prefecture of the Landes departement and was endowed with a certain number of buildings in the First Empire style designed by a remarkable architect and town-planner called David François Panay. In 1946, the town saw a renewal of activity thanks to the creation of an air base. Mont de Marsan continues this embellishment along with a town-planning policy favouring small houses with gardens and integrating contemporary architecture (Hotel du departement, Ensemble du Midou, New Saint Roch market place…).
